Concrete arch dam is one of very important dam structures in water power engineering. The safety of dam bodies subjected to the seismic wave is one of the questions that domestic and international scholars concern at present. Dam and foundation of the dam 3-D model of overflow arch dam and drainage arch dam are constructed by using the software of ANSYS8.0. The Overflow arch dam model is constructed with 8 node element. On the basis of the analytic model, two types of concrete arch dam (overflow arch dam and drainage arch dam) are analyzed under the static hydraulic pressure, bed load pressure and gravity, and the results of static analyses are compared respectively. Subsequentally, dynamic analyses considering earthquake wave from two directions (parallel to the river and vertical to the river) are made on these two dams respectively. The results show that, compared with that of overflow arch dam, aseismatic ability of drainage arch dam is weaker under the condition of earthquake wave parallel to the river being loaded. The reason for this phenomenon is that drainage orifice existing in the drainage arch dam broke the continuity of arch and girder, and aroused the concentrations of stress in some local parts of the drainage arc dam. However, under the earthquake wave vertical to the river, there are no differences between the aseismatic abilities of these two dams.
