When asked to draw a picture of their ideal landscape people usually show a high degree of conformity in their responses. They seem to have internalized a prototype of a culture landscape containing certain features like water, hills, some trees, a little forest and usually a path. Landscape planning would appear to be an easy task if our only goal was to create such ideal landscape pictures. But a landscape has to provide more than a pleasing picture. There are many functions that a landscape has to fulfil besides providing beauty. Moreover, landscape is not a picture that can be conserved. Change in the European landscape is not a new phenomenon. In the 21th century, however, landscape transformation has taken place at a previously unknown speed. This thesis try to make clear the possibility of landscape planning transformation in the future by analysing the meaning of culture to landscape, the culture developments and the effect on landscape planning influenced by those developments. Though landscape planning is an important instrument to regulate the relationship between man and environment in such landscapes, in general practice landscape planning faces a lot of concrete problems . Requirements, methods and potentials of landscape planning that enable it to tackle these problems are proposed. In the end the author hope that this thesis can be useful to Chinese landscape planning by analyzing and studying external experience.
