Taking the Dabaian masonry gravity dam in Zhejiang province and Dong fang hong masonry gravity dam in Anhui province as examples, the problems of destructive mechanism and safety evaluation of the masonry dam are discussed in detail and the mathematic models describing its structure and seepage behavior are researched. The research will put forward theoretic foundation and practicality method for the safety evaluation of the masonry dam, and establish the foundation of further research for its safety evaluation. The main contents are as follows.(1) All the inner and outer factors which affect the safety of the masonry dam are analyzed systematically, and the destructive mechanism of the masonry gravity dam is discussed in detail.(2) Considering the different elasticity modules between impervious face and rock fills, three models, the material theory, the material theory of considering different elasticity modules and finite element method are used to calculate the stress of the dam body. And the stress between impervious face and rock fills is compared and analyzed.(3) According to the characteristics of the mortar rock fills and mortar gaps, the mortar gaps are regarded as fractures. By use of Monte—Carlo stochastic model,a fracture network seepage model is established for masonry gravity dam, and a new method of studying the seepage behavior of the masonry gravity dam is discussed.
