The hydraulic balanced wicket with connecting levers and rolling wheels has been widely used in all kinds of water-conservancy projects and brought about much economic benefits because of its automatically switching, simple structure, low cost, etc. At the same time, it has some unstable phenomena such as continually swinging, flapping and so on. The paper mainly concerns about the stability analysis, structural optimization design of the hydraulic balanced wicket with connecting levers and rolling wheels. Some researches on gate opening and closure, flow through the gate and the stability of gate operating also were concerned by model tests. Based on above works, some effective measures were put forward to make the balanced wicket better applied not only in water-conservancy projects, but also in shipping projects, city environmental protection and other correlative projects, which will make a great difference on social development and bettering living enviornment. The main contents of the paper including:(1) The working principle and basic equation of equilibrium of hydraulic balanced wicket were comprehensively discussed. Load condition of hydraulic balanced wicket was studied, and stability of gate operating was analysed by drawing gate opening and closure curves. The author found main factors which influenced the stability of gate operating and brought forward some practical measures about it. Furthermore, difference about hydraulic character between balanced wicket and general gates was described according to the operating mechanism, such as problems of dynamical water pressure and flow. The program of calculating flow was made up.(2) There is a fault in traditional gate designing measures that can not seek optimum programs. In order to avoid the fault, in this paper some dimensions such as the length of connecting levers, radius of rolling wheels, the position of rear abut etc are optimized to ensure stable operating of hydraulic balanced wicket. Taking account of various factors, the author composed programs for optimizing the gate of 6*2.5 m2 in which optimum principle of complex method was applied, and analyzed the influence of downstream water level on gate operating character.(3) According to 《design specification for sluice 》 (SL 265-2001) and 《design specification for hydraulic reinforced concrete》 (DL/T5057-1996),the general design theory of balanced wicket were discussed, includingconfirming the position of abuts, reinforcement of face slab and so on. Stress and strain of the gate were analyzed by software of Ansys.(4) According to similitude criteria of gravity and motion, a gate model of 6*2. 5 m2 was made and some simulation tests have been practised. In the tests, some problems in the operation of balanced wicket were, found and analyzed , and some practical measures were brought forward. During the model tests, actual opening and closure curves of balanced wicket have been drawn by measuring upstream water level and the angle of gate opening .The author compared the measured flow through the gate with the flow calculated by formula and demonstrated the appropriation of the formulas .
