This dissertation is grounded on the National Natural Science Foundation Research on the Multi Perceptive Factors of the Product (Grant No. 50275122) and the National High-Tech. R&D Program for CIMS Research on the Computer Aided Conceptual Design for innovation of the product (Grant No. 2002AA411110). Aiming at adapting to the development trend of digital design and solving the problem that the traditional Computer Aided Design couldn't satisfy the intuition requirements of innovative design in conceptual design stage, this dissertation presented the 3D conceptual design algorithms with sketch interaction and constructed a prototype for the designer in the conceptual design, combining with voxel-based modeling method. The main research contents and achievements are articulated as follows:1. Theory of voxel-based modeling method Based on the research of present geometric modeling techniques, voxel-based modeling method is introduced to represent the object in the computer. This dissertation proposed data structures and store algorithms of the voxel model, also it compared the performance between the voxel model and other geometry models. The result shows that the adoption of voxel model in conceptual design is feasible.2. Conceptual design of sketch interaction The sketch interaction progress of conceptual design is divided into three layers, curve sketch, curve design and model design based on sketch curve. The key technologies and core algorithms of these three interaction layers were presented respectively.3. The post-processing of conceptual design 3D model scheme For a higher rendering effect, the extraction algorithm of triangle meshes from the design model was presented. Aiming at reusing the design scheme, the transformation algorithm of different models was provided.4. Design and Implementation of prototype Sketch Voxel A prototype system SketchVoxel was designed and implemented using Visualization Toolkit (VTK). Finally some design examples were given to validate this prototype.The algorithms and prototype presented in this dissertation face for the 3D conceptual design stage, and combine the advantages of sketch and voxel model to provide designers a top-down stereo thinking mode and the ability to design complex forms arbitrarily. This method makes designers away from the fussy design explanation and be liberated from the complicated design operation. They can use this system not only to design from 3D angle but also to create much more complicated model based on the traditional sketch strokes, which can decrease the possibilities of broken points in the streams of innovation thought and information transference.
