With the development of micro-electronic and computer, virtual instrument (VI) based on new technology of electronic and measurement technology has been developed quickly. Taking the advantages of the PC's powerful ability in high-speed data acquisition, controlling, operation, analyzing processing and colorful graphic human-machine interface, people can build virtual instrument (VI) with various functions and graphic front pane which combines with the function of traditional instrument, integration of operation software, circuitry and computer. Compared with traditional instrument, it has many advantages such as low costs in development and maintenance; shorter period of refresh technology; easyer in multi-connecting and netting, and so on. Absorbing the theory of virtual instrument, a multi-purpose virtual digital storage oscilloscope is developed successfully. This system combines intelligent measuring instrument with EDA and ASIC design technology, computer hardware and software technology, digital signal processing together. The system hardware includes high-speed data acquisition circuits, analogue signal conditioning circuit, A/D conversion; FPGA circuit with controlling and processing functions and PCI interfacing. The system software includes VHDL program, lowlevel hardware driver program, signal processing program and waveform displaying snd frequency analyzing programs.This system involves EDA technology, designation of high speed digital system, PCI bus interfacing, hardware driver software and user's application software.
