Retractable roof structures are the result of introducing the retractable idea intobuildings. And the stadium or gym with retractable roof is becoming a leading trendrecently and all circles of people are keen on constructing this kind of buildings.Compared with a conventional stadium or gym it has its own characteristics: the firstis that athletic and other events return to natural environments and all events heldthere are warded off unfavorable effects of bad weathers. The second is that it canensure athletic sports to be held on schedule. The third is that feasibility ofmultifunction set in one building becomes more practical. Although many suchbuildings have been constructed, there are many problems which are urgent to besolved both in theory and in practice. And there appears a phenomenon that theory haslagged behind practice. The paper has mainly studied the open-close process ofretractable roofs, and analyzed its mechanical characteristics in the process. Based on the huge amounts of reference materials and research work onretractable roof structures already done, the paper presents a comprehensiveunderstanding of retractable roof structures, and makes a summary of the developinghistory and status in quo of retractable roof structures. The paper mainly analyzes thecharacteristics of two kinds of structures — deployable roof and move-spatiallyretractable roof. In the paper, geometric characteristics of deployable roofs — a newtype of retractable roof is studied in detail. Based on the theory of computationaldynamics of multibody systems, the paper presents a new method of form-finding fordeployable roofs by computer. And the form-finding of move-spatially retractable roofis realized by coordinate conversion with AutoCAD. By programming with finiteelement method, the paper brings modeling rapidly with AutoCAD and calculating tosuccess. The mechanics behavior of the case of two sides moving at the same time, only one side roof moving and the roof under inertia force has been analyzed in thepaper.
