How to find the optimum routing of cables is an important problem and main part of urban distribution planning. Presently, designers usually perform the routing design manually with consideration of such constraints as network structure, street condition. As a result, most final planning designs are far from optimal with long planning time, which seriously affects the efficiency and quality of urban network distribution planning and reconstruction.A practical and efficient automated tool for optimizing the routing of cables is presented in this paper, which is based on artificial intelligence and network graph theory combined with distribution network Geographic Information System (GIS). The work done in this paper is as follows:The application of GIS in distribution planning is studied and the recognition, acquisition and preprocessing of spatial data in the geographic information of planning area, are completed. The automated routing is divided into two parts: primary cable routing and secondary cable routing. a)on the research of primary cable routing, an automated primary routing algorithm based on Dijkstra algorithm is put forward, which can generate automatically the primary radiate distribution planning graph of the area to be planned.b) In the research of secondary cable routing, a heuristic search algorithm—production system reasoning of artificial intelligence is put forward in this paper to solve the problem of load allocation in outlet cables of main supply sources. Its effectiveness is proved in test results. The method and procedure of software analysis and design mainly of complicated algorithms are presented in this paper. In the software, three-layer architecture and COM technology are employed. Design Patterns are applied to develop the components of each layer to reusable and more flexible components, group these components into packages organically and build application program, thus realize automated routing function.
