Based on the application of natural language understanding to product design, thenoun phrase subordinate to user requirements, which expressed in natural language style,is understood and analyzed. With the whole system running, the results are conversedinto the requirement of conceptual design to support the future design. First, method based on knowledge should be adopted in the natural languageunderstanding applied to product design domain according to the characteristic ofnatural language understanding in product design domain. Second, Conceptualdependency theory is chosen as an important complementarity to the method based onknowledge, through analysis and compares of several existing semantic analysis methodpresent. Third, Conceptual dependency trees are set up based on the conceptualdependency theory to denote the relation of concepts. By detailed analysis of theintension and the extension of concepts, noun, dynamic noun and noun phrase classestemplates are established on method based on knowledge. The emphasis of noun phraseunderstanding is put on the search for key words and the definitude about the relation ofmembers. As a result, accomplished the understanding of noun phrase based on theattributive-centered relation, coordinate relation and appositive relation. Forth, semanticanalysis program is written to understand noun phrase on the basis of the work done,which can understand the Chinese noun phrase in corresponding fields. Last, semanticanalysis of natural language understanding is applied to requirement analysis archetypalsystem for the design of bearings. The noun phrase in user requirements is understoodand analyzed. With other models running, the system runs well after debug.
