Measuring of lightning parameters is the base work of lightning research. It is very important for researching the lightning characteristics, analyzing the accident of lightning, identifying the responsibility of lightning strike outage accident and discussing the strategies of lightning protection. It also can provide precise original data of atmosphere over-voltage for designing insulation co-ordination. Compared with the traditional methods, the proposed ideal has the following advantages such as material cheapness, highly precise measure and it can support the lightning census in large regions. This paper deeply discussed the mechanism of magnetic tape detector, mainly focused on the tape detector appliance in engineering fields, making it not only measure the lightning current peak but also its supreme deepness.My paper is mainly made up of the following parts. The first is to fix and debug the impulse current generator and fix kinds of channel models of lightning current by which to generate artificial lightning current. Then put the magnetic tapes on the channel models in different ways todetect the lightning parameters.The second part is to develop the program of MTLCD about the magnetic tape wave-form process using MatLab software. The MTLCD can display the signal of waveform with the magnetic record being erased in the screen of computer. The observer also can drought or zoom in the waveform at will. Meanwhile it can filter the waveform and gather the envelope and calculation the current peak and max steepness of lightning by length of erased magnetic record.Thirdly we need analyze the difference of length of erased magnetic record between kinds magnetic tape or pre-recorded sine wave on magnetic tape, and finding the min and max lightning current that can be recorded by magnetic tape. Then we confirm the type of the magnetic tapes and the way of installing which fit to the line towers. We calculate the regression curve about length of erased magnetic record and lightning current peak. We analyze the error of recording data and find a new means about direct measurement of the max lightning steepness with magnetic tapes.This Study in this paper shows that the proposed method is superior to the present method for the lightning current measuring in the economical, practicability and precision of measurement. Another important point is that the magnetic tape detector can measure the lightning steepness directly, largely expand the magnetic tape appliancefield. This is significant for analyzing lightning accident completely and accurately and finding out the cause of lightning accident as aspect of lightning current peak and lightning steepness. Magnetic tape detector can offer a new way for developing highly precise lightning census in large region from lightning current peak and lightning steepness.
