Research On The Design Of Contemporary Museums And Galleries--The Design Conception And Design Methods Based On It Toward Popularization

From 1980's to now, there is great development of museum in world wide, especially in some developed countries. Nowadays in China, with the increase of economics and people's living level, the social demands of establishing museum have also increased.The modernization of museum not only means the visible objects like modern facilities, constructions and images, but also means the invisible objects like new conception of function and value of the museum. Through recognizing the essence of museum design and the evolving trend of the museum, this thesis wants to explore the trend of contemporary museum design concept and the method of design that is useful for our country.In the first part of this thesis, through describing the variation trend of contemporary museum definition and reviewing the history of museum architecture, the thesis outlines the evolving course of social function and architectural pattern of the museum. This thesis also studies the museum as one kind of cultural phenomenon, observes its reflection to the social variation and summarizes the reason and inevitability of which contemporary museum go towards popular. As the achievement of this part of research, this thesis explains the connotation of the popular trend of contemporary museum: (1) supporting multi-elemental cultural consumption; (2) in close proximity to public live; (3) encouraging the public participation consciousness. It also analyzes the goal of the museum design that under this background that is creating a public activity center, which can attract people participating actively and actualizing self-consummation in many directions.In the second part of the thesis, based on the instruction of research before, the author summarizes the variation of museum under the popular demands. Then, in accordance with these demands, from both of urban design and architecture design, the thesis also summarizes the design principle and particular design methods of the museum design. From the viewpoint of urban design, in the fourth chapter of this thesis, the author summarizes the design principle and methods of the museum from four sections: design concept, site plan, handling of special space and external public space. In the fifth chapter, from the viewpoint of architectural design, the author probes into design methods and demands of exhibition space, social space and non-museum space.The thesis finally summarizes the actuality of museum in our country and gives some prediction on the progress of Chinese museum. It points out that the important topic of Chinese contemporary museum design research is to find an intersection of museum activity and public cultural activity and seek any possibility to show the popularization of museum.
