1,700TEU container is a newly developed high-tech and high value-added ship. Many problems popped up in the course of construction of this type of ships. And the difficulty to keep the verticality and horizontally of the crane pedestal, which influenced the whole construction of the ship, is just one of them. This paper describes an improved design of the crane pedestal, a revised structure of the original pedestal, a new process, and new material, all of which shortens substantial work of construction and increases the quality of the product. The equivalent stress and critical stress before and after this improvement of the pedestal are calculated with the applications of the theory of maximum shearing stress, the theory of the resultant deformation of bending and torsion of a circular beam. Results show that in terms of strength and stability the improved pedestal is much better compared with the original pedestal. The detailed analysis of these 1,700TEU container and other successive ships proves that the developed crane pedestal is easy to construct, and stable and reliable in operation. In addition, the construction period of a ship can be shortened, production cost reduced and the product quality improved. With the detailed analysis, it is proved that this new design is featured with clear train of thought and simple principles and easy applications, etc.
