Increasing the dam height to enlarge the water storage is very often encountered in China. The main engineering problem is to properly design the interface strength measures between the old dam part and new cast dam body. Till now, few researches are reported concerning such unifying technique neither focusing on the stress density properties in such interface. The conventional measures, usually backouting parts of original dam, and plating widely mortar bolts, result in unreasonable design, construction difficulty, and increasing in project cost.In order to improve the project design from mainly according to experience torational and quantitative optimized process scheme, this paper studies the strengthening mechanism of the interface and strength criterion using multi-function Austrian FEM analysis software FINAL to the Luo-Hui Qu main project heightening, on the basis of concluding strengthening experience and principle of the former cement-grouting-bolts, chemical-grouting-bolls etc. Furthermore, stress distribution characteristics on the dam and foundation and its effect on the stability of the dam and foundation are analyzed. Additionally the conventional processing methods are analyzed and compared, the process scheme of laying out chemical-grouting-bolts in the interface is put forward, and the feasibility and optimized parameters used in design are argued. Generally, this paper compares the cement-grouting-bolts and chemical-grouting-bolts thoroughly in many aspects such as design principle, construction method, condition of functioning, and the invested capital.Some general laws are concluded to direct other heightening engineering.
