In this thesis, boundary characteristic matrices of spring-damper are obtained by using the minimum energy theory according to wave theory in elastic media. In order to overcome the drawback of classical fixed boundary models,a finite element model of soil-structure system has been suggested for the seismic response analysis of frame structures. In the model, components of upper frame structures, such as beams and columns, are simulated with plane 4-node quadrilateral parametric elements, and soils with plane 4-node quadrilateral parametric elements. The lateral boundary nodes of the soil finite element mesh are tied together and the bottom of the mode is imposed with spring-damper boundary so that the dynamic interaction between soils and structures can be fully taken into consideration. Through the comparison of analysis results in seismic response of construction structures,spring-damper boundary is better than viscous one in improving the computational precise and avoiding the disadvantages of fixed boundary which can not radiate energy.
