With the rapid progress of wireless communication technology, the wireless network as the expansion and supplementation of the current wired network is turning into an important part of the modern military communication infrastructure. Packet radio network (PRNET) attracts a great attention in military domain because of its self-organizing and self-recovering capability. As a major means of military communication, PRNET possesses some advantages that other communication means doses not have. The establishment of our military PRNET standard and the establishment of the tactical internet that meets the requirements of the coordination among the navy, army and air forces. This is of great practical significance to improve our military combat capability. At the beginning of the paper, the author introduced general situation of the PRNET including the topological structure, main characteristics and key technologies. Then, the author conducted a research on the MAC protocol of PRNET and an analysis of some factors that influence the performance of MAC. The working principle of MAC for MIL-STD-188-22013 (American military standard) was particularly presented and its five algorithms (R-NAD, P-NAD, H-NAD, DAP-NAD, RE-NAD) was analyzed and compared. At last, an implementation method of MAC was given.Furthermore, the author established a simulation model with OPNET and simulated four MAC processes, namely the Aloha, 1-perist CSMA, R-NAD and DAP-NAD for 220B protocol. By analyzing the statistical results, the performance of MIL- STD-188-220B was validated. The network performance of the MAC protocol was evaluated and the influence of different network timing model parameters and simulation parameters on network performance were discussed .The paper provided an reference for grasping the principle of MAC for 220B protocol and the application of PRNET in military communication and emergency communication.
