In this paper, the feature and the development actuality of microcomputer excitation device for synchronous electrical generator are discussed, the theory and implement method of microprocessor based excitation regulation are analysed, the design idea of excitation controller for hydroelectric generator based on microprocessor of INTEL 80C196KC are put forward, on this basis, the hardware system and software module of microprocessor based excitation controller for hydroelectric generator are developed.Detailed framework of the main hardware^ flow charts of the main software and their function implementating of the controller are described in the paper. For adopted alternating current sampling technique, the hardware cost are reduced, dynamic performance are improved. Digital pulse circuitry based on Atmel 90S8515 are developed with good reliability and high precision. All software function modules of the controller are programmed by module design method, in this way, modified the program and extended the functions of the controller are facility.The developed device has been tested on generator in laboratory. The test result indicates that: the designed hardware and software possess a better flexibility, the whole properties reach or precede state criterion and the device can be applied in industry production by mended.
