This paper analyzed the effects of several excitation controllers, and found that the unsuitable controller can cause a low frequency oscillation on power system. It is considered that selecting the control strategy according to the control purpose in this paper. From the analyzing the excitative conflictions of several different electric variable (ΔPe, ΔU_g, Δω, etc.) will make a bad effect on its damping of low frequency oscillations. A new excitation approach is presented in this paper. This approach adjusts field voltage in terms of the speed change of the generator, provides efficient damping of low frequency oscillations. It is a single-goal control. Based on the proposed approach, an excitation controller was designed. A step-disturb was considered as the disturbance of power system. In addition, a genetic algorithm was employed to optimize the parameters of the controller. Simulation results show that this approach is effective.
