This paper is dedicated to the research of screen space, containing its characteristics, space effect, and how it can be used in different circumstances. The screen space consists of two parts, one is the device that separates the space, the other is its space effect. Its prototype is the traditional Chinese screen. In this paper, the spatial elements of screen space are extracted from the traditional screen, to help finding out ten kinds of typical screen space devices, including sliding door, half door, labyrinth and so on. These typical devices are classified according to whether they can be moved or not. By the analysis of each devices, the concept of screen space develops from the traditional screen to a diversified and organized system. Each part of the system is simplified to a diagram for the convenience of future use.The characteristic of the screen space is that the screen cuts the space incompletely. It separates space. at the same time, connects it. People in zone 1 can feel clearly that there is another zone 2 on the other side. It makes sure elements aren’t too far apart or too close together. With the "half cut" feature, screen space can easily and naturally creates a neutral zone, a buffer area, when it is used on the boundary of a region to design the space in between. Also, when designed as a structure for a whole building or a half-open outdoor space, it can provide an overall view, and bring people both physical and psychological sense of security and comfort.
