Gas Insulated Switchgear is the switchgear used in the power industry, it is full of gas SF6to insulate the switchgear from the air and extinct the electric arc. Because of its modular design, safe, reliable and easy to maintenance, it is widely used in the high and medium pressure power equipment. GIS shell is the shell of the GIS, as the GIS is used more and more widely, there comes the request of its design and manufacture. So this paper contains some research on the GIS shell’s design and manufacture, the main work is as follows:1. The uniaxial tensile test of the sample from the6063seamless tube was done by the use of tensile testing machine and the strain gauge, sample’s mechanical properties were obtained, and two kinds of constitutive model were built for FEA, then the more accurate one was obtained by simulating the tensile test.2. The strain data of the T-joint shell under pressure test along the specific path were obtained by the strain gauge, then these data were translated into equivalent stress by Hooke’s law and Incremental theory, the distribution of equivalent stress along the path and dangerous region on the shell were obtained.3. Understand the drawing process of T-joint shell, and the simulation was done by using DEFOEM, then the influence of the die velocity, die, times and hole on the workpiece was researched, and the rules that how these factors influence the drawing process were obtained. The process simulation provides a reference to build the simplified model.4. The simplified model of GIS T-joint shell was built based on the simulation of the drawing process, and the pressure test was simulated by using ANSYS, the simplified model and FEA settings were verified by comparing the FEA result with the pressure test data. On this basis, assessment of GIS T-joint shell was done according to ASME Ⅷ-2’s Design by analysis, and then the thickness of the original GIS T-joint shell was optimized.5. Summary of this paper is presented, and the proposal about the further study of GIS shell is proposed.
