As a component being used to link vertical transport in architecture, it plays an important role in the building. Actually, steps have even further effects and functions. For example, if steps were artfully or skillfully used, it is not difficult to create more abundant space and flown lines, as well as to bring the function of guiding people s behavior and psychology. This article, according to the theory of architecture design, discussed the functions and design approaches of architectural steps from different points of view, based on its functional properties and modal characters, to enrich the correlative theory about the design of architecture steps.Above all, this article analyzed the evolution and development of architecture steps at home and abroad from historical point of view. These are core chapters for instructing the designing of architecture steps.Finally, with the fading of the conception of modern architectural theory and the emergence of new architectural cognition and theory, building space and forms are tending to become more and more complex and diversification. It has a profound impact on architecture steps, and endues the patterns and functions of steps with a new connotation.
