Mountain, as a common natural form of land, has occupied a large proportion in our country of 9.6 million square kilometers. Accordingly, the mountain city is also a very important part of Chinese cities. Resident area is the largest one in the city function blocks. Because of the distinction of mountain terrain, the non-integer dimension shown by mountain terrain, as well as the contradiction between triangle, circle, square and other basic geometric shapes which are studied by Euclidean geometry, and the increasingly deteriorating relationship between the construction of mountain resident area and the nature environment, the concept of fractal geometry has been introduced to this dissertation. Taking Chongqing for example, author has researched the relationship between moutain resident area design and the natural environment from the perspective of fractal geometry.Fractal geometry is a subject which researches the complex physical discipline and reveals the regular relationship in the complexity of nature by some features such as self-similarity, fractal dimension and layered iterative. Based on the convenience of the fractal geometry on descripting and analyzing the moutain, author has researched the shape of moutain resident area from the perspective of fractal geometry which is different from the traditional Euclidean geometry. The aim of the study is to provide planners and architects an alternative point of view, to make moutain resident area and nature environment get a better combination. The concept of fractal geometry can only solve part of the problems which accord with the thought of fractal geometry, not all the problems existing in the current resident area design.From the field investigation and documentation, author has summarized the main problems of current moutain resident area planning and the basic criteria which the moutain area design should abide by. By introducting of the concept of fractal geometry, analyzing Ciqikou mountain settlements, in accordance with the fractal thinking, which mainly developed relying on self-organized force, and contrasting Ciqikou to the current resident area pattern, author finally has summed up the impact of the concept of fractal geometry fractal to the moutain resedent area pattern. Basing on summarizing and practicing the method of fractal geometry and the design criteria summed up in this dissertation, author has also given answers to part of the problems of the moutain resident area from the perspective of fractal geometry.
