Highway is the site where automobile runs. The quality of the highway's alignment influences traffic safety directly. It has great significance for improving traffic safety that combined design index of highway plane and vertical alignment are analyzed systematically, which provides references for highway plane and vertical alignment design.According to analyzing related research on highway traffic accident, it can be found that both curve and steep slope combined alignment and steep slope followed by curve with small radius are traffic accident black spots. The relativity of design index of above two highway alignment are study in this paper.Based on running stability of vehicles, the models of rollover and side slip and the vertical stability model on down-slope were established under the condition of vertical unstable according to analyzing the running characteristics of vehicle on highway section of combined plane and vertical. Based on above models, the relations between each index of highway plane and vertical alignment. Vehicle running safety model was established on steep slope followed by curve with small radius according to vehicle's running analysis on highway down-slope and curve section. Then the relation of highway design index was analyzed.Above models were simulated using the software of MATLAB. The relation between design indexes of plane and vertical combined alignment and steep slope followed by curve with small radius. They were compared with the design indexes in Technical Standard of Highway Engineering and suggestion values of highway alignment indexes were given. Finally, operation speed of provincial highway 224line in Yunnan (from Xiaguan to Weishan k9+655.9~k20+152.6) was analyzed based on above models. Results showed that dangerous factors had existed on part sections of this highway and safety measures should be taken. The paper provides theoretical gist for highway alignment design.
