Multi-stage progressive die is a kind of stamping tool with high precision and complex structure, which has been used in various industries extensively. Currently, 2D CAD systems are the main design software adopted for progressive die of motor core. As it is not easy to find defects, check interference, modify correlated drawings, etc. in 2D patterns, the development of 3D software and PC technology, which describes parts in solid modeling, can dramatically help to resolve the above problems. And 3D software has gradually become a mainstream tool in the design industry. Furthermore, 3D CAD system allows more specialized and localized implementation via redevelopment, therefore, could be better adapted to industrial practice.A system has been developed which is interfaced with a parametric and feature-based CAD system, SolidWorks through Visual C++ in Visual Studio 2005. This thesis studies the key technology and design approach of redevelopment. Specialized CAD modules for designing die set and holes on die plates were developed. And the detailed process of developing these CAD modules is introduced in the thesis.During the process of developing the CAD modules, the top-down design approach was adopted to create 3D models. To satisfy the industrial practical needs, the die sets were categorized accordingly as standard die sets and customized die sets. And the corresponding model libraries were built respectively. The associated design approach was adopted during the course of generating 3D models. The automatic die sets assembly was achieved through setting SolidWorks Equations reasonably, combining the associated design and parametric design method and integrating with the redevelopment work.During the development, the types of holes on die plates were classified and studied by considering the industrial practice, and the relationship between holes on die plates. The relationship among the associated parts was summarized. The Library Feature technology in SolidWorks software was studied and adopted in the design of progressive die plate holes. Combining the redevelopment work, the associated design between the components and their correlated holes on die plates was achieved, hence, improved the automation level of the progressive die design. In the procedure of designing progressive die, the die sets were designed prior to other parts because the die sets provide a base for detailed design of other parts. Therefore, during the course of building the die sets model library, the design requirements of the die plate hole were taken into account. Thus, the validity, reliability and stability of the holes design on associated die plates were assured.
