Knowledge management (KM) manages all product-related information and process. It can provide a good environment of data integration for achieving design reuse and improving design efficiency. It is important to implement rapid product design. And KM is an important foundation of it. Design knowledge of ship gearing is studied and technologies of knowledge management are researched in this dissertation. A prototype system is designed which functions as knowledge management.Firstly, according to the actual situation of a ship-building enterprise, the requirements and overall goals of knowledge management are analyzed. A frame of design knowledge management system is established. The functions and functional implementation are discussed.Secondly, based on the characteristics of the design knowledge, multiple types of knowledge involved in design processes are classified. Based on the requirement of knowledge representation by knowledge management, this paper uses ontology as modeling tools. An ontology-based modeling method of the design knowledge is discussed in detail. Ontology-based model of design knowledge is established and expressed by using Web Ontology Language (OWL).Then, the characteristics of design knowledge base are summarized. This paper also discusses the construction of the knowledge base. A systematic database is established by using technologies of the conventional relation database in order to slove the storage of design knowledge.Based on the knowledge base, knowledge maps are researched and constructed for the shipping enterprise. According to the shortcoming of the traditional knowledge retrieval methods, an algorithm of ontology-based semantic similarity is presented. This algorithm is used to realize preliminary knowledge management on the semantic level. It can be a useful instrument for knowledge reuse in shipping enterprises.At last, the development environment for the design knowledge management is discussed, and the key technologies are detailed, such as Web-based view of drawings and the achievement of dymatic-tree gegeration. Some functions are illustrated to testify the technologies in this paper.
