With the growing demand for unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), low cost and small UAV become more and more important. Simplifying sensor configuration is an effect way to reduce the weight and cost of the small UAV. Focusing on the practice and application, the study on the simple control technology for the low cost and small UAV is very useful.Firstly, this paper has briefly analyzed the practical sensor configuration of UAV, two simple sensor configurations are proposed, which can save vertical gyro and three-axis angular rate gyro respectively compared traditional sensor configuration with vertical gyro, three-axis angular rate gyro, GPS and air data computer.Secondly, the simple control strategies are formulated which are based on the simple sensor configurations. Besides, according to the difference in nature stability among UAVs, two kinds of simple control methodology are designed emphatically.Afterward, the 6 DOF nonlinear mathematical model of one UAV have been presented and built with MATLAB/S-function. Combined with aerodynamic data, kinetic characteristic and mode characteristic have been analyzed. According to the characteristic of the UAV and the simple control methodologies, the simple control law has been designed. After all that, the simple control law has been verified through the comparation with the traditional control law. Then, the feasibilities and limitations are analyzed.Lastly, in order to examine the flight control performance gengeally, the semi-physical real-time simulation has been carried out for the both simple sensor configured systems,besides,the simple sensor configured system without three-axis angular rate gyro has been flight. The comparative study shows the effectiveness of the proposed simple control technology for the UAV with low frequency and nature stability.
