The maturity level of the barrier-free pedestrian design is one of the criteria of the city civilization, which has a direct impact on the city's unique feature and quality. Because of the comparative poor economic, social and humanity condition, barrier-free design of the mountainous regions lags behind greatly and becomes very difficult, especially influenced by the special terrain and landform. On one hand, distance variation in height as well as the vulnerability of the region contact system caused by the water cut and the mountain separation lead in so many difficulties in barrier-free design of the public pedestrian space of mountain city. On the other hand, the high cost and great difficulties of the construction under the condition of mountain city make it almost impossible to reconstruct substantially or design alterably once the project is completed. For these reasons, we should be concerned about the barrier-free pedestrian space layout and construction of mountain city, the study of which has become an urgent need.Chongqing, as the only municipality in central and western regions of China and the political and economic center of upstream of Yangtze River, is a typical of mountain cities. If we want to construct Chongqing into a livable city, then the barrier-free pedestrian design need more attention and guidance, therefore, research and development of barrier-free design of the public pedestrian space in Chongqing has a positive and practical significance. In this paper, we main studied the downtown city of Chongqing. Based on the existing basic urban barrier-free design theories and practical experience, we did research on the downtown current construction of the public pedestrian space design. What's more, by using the multi-knowledge of architecture, urban planning and ecological landscape, we will try to clarify the current barrier-free design situation and the problems of the public pedestrian space of mountain city. After studying, exploring and classifying the feasible barrier-free construction way of the pedestrian space, we finally hope to find the suitable solutions for barrier-free pedestrian space design of mountain city. This paper will be written from the following four parts:Chapter 1 and 2 discuss the research background, significance, the related definition of the concept, and elaborate the current situation of the public pedestrian space construction of mountain types. We will take Hong Kong as a comparison case to study.Chapter 3 classifies and restores the status of barrier-free design of Chongqing city public pedestrian space. Furthermore, we will combine the views of the citizen through a questionnaire to prepare the following study and analysis.Chapter 4, according to the main barrier-free design problems and reasons of the pedestrian space of downtown in Chongqing, we take the way of synthetical induction to solve it and specify it from the aspect of city planning, urban design and architectural design.Chapter 5, we will discuss the barrier-free design of mountainous public pedestrian space from a sociological point of view and management of view for proposing some personal views about creating a good and comfortable society without any public pedestrian barriers and with reasonable facilities.
