The wind energy is a kind of green renewable resources. It is mainly utilized by electrical power genenration through wind turbine by far. For the wind is random and free from the artificial control, the wind power integration into grid should have some adverse effects on the system safety and stability. When the wind farm capacity is small, the system is strong enough to accept it and such negative impacts can be neglected. However, when a large amount of wind power is filling into the power grid, the impacts on the system safety and stability must be of severe conscious. Therefore, the wind power integration study and the wind power penetration limit calculation are issues of great significance to be studied. This paper is mainly devoted to the study of the following aspects:First of all, the principle and modeling issues of wind farm are formulated. The detail models of wind speed, wind turbine and generation units in are introduced. These models are available in PSCAD/EMTDC, which can be used to accurately simulate the operation characteristics of wind farm.Secondly, the impacts of the wind integration on the grid are analysed comprehensively. The impacts on the operation of power grid and system transient stability are studied respectively through detail time domain simulation. Simulation results shows that the power output fluctuation mainly affects the system frequency. On the other hand, the transient stability of the grid including wind farm is worse when the capacity of the wind farm is bigger.Lastly, the current methods of calculating the wind power penetration limit are overviewed. By dynamic simulation method, the wind power penetration limit of a benchmark system including 3 conventional generators and 9 bus is studied. It can be concluded that the cross-border of the frequency is the maily factor of calculating the wind power penetration limit.
