Utopia And Urban Design In The Consumer Society

Urban Design and Utopia have the same beginning. The collaboration between them created the ideal and the reality to a new situation from isolation to combination. This article attempts to explore this relation. From production society to consumer society this paper attempts to discuss the development trend of urban design and utopia. This article also reveals the plight of contemporary urban spatial development, while exploring the possible urban design ideas and methods.Firstly, this article attempts to discuss the basic relationship between urban design and utopia and the impact of utopia to the development on urban design. The article also discusses the concepts of space production and consumer society.Then the paper analyzes the history context of the development of urban utopia and discusses the concept of three types of urban utopia such as of utopian in the production society, naturalism, modernism. Through the angle of space production, the article explores the contradictions between development of capitalism and urban space and the corresponding path to utopia. Focusing on cultural transformation since the 70's and consumerism for the characterization of post-modern urban society, the paper brings out the commercialization of space showing contemporary urban fragmentation, fragmentation, symbolic, the tendency of virtualization with the information network for the support, through the ads, images, movies and other media under the process of space production to the consumption space and the space-time compression.Arising from the commercialization of urban space and the contradictions of modern capitalist urban society in the path of self-correcting, the article looks for the developed countries in dealing with urban problems in the urban design strategy, focusing on social polarization and the two aspects of the ecological crisis.This article summarizes three basic trends of utopian thought of contemporary urban design: First, utopian thinking of the city is the fundamental standpoint of the big city study, emphasizing the city's existence and certainly reasonable, is trying to shape the modern city as the core life. In contrast anti-urban utopia, in order to criticize the city as the representative of the city and the negative return to the natural countryside is their ultimate goal. The third category is controlling urban utopia. It does not agree with the city utopia that is not in favor of anti-urban utopia, but based on criticism of both proposed a third possibility. This urban utopian thought and social reality is that the best combination of points. On the current direction of mainstream urbanism concept (here especially the first class) to critically examine, it makes amendments at any time based on changes and supplements to avoid its fully into the system of capitalist political economy to become another commodity, which is full of utopian architects imagination and reality is constantly looking for the meeting point in the process of a practical type of urbanism.Finally, the article analyzes the China's urban space. Based on departure from the practice of everyday life, we choose to use the dialectical idea to deal with the relationships. This balance based on the macro level is the response to social inequality and the environmental sustainability. On the one hand the article stresses a higher perspective, a broader perspective to the link of all areas of society and building, which has more important real innovative forward-looking. This is the intersection of urban design and the utopia, but also to the significance of a combination of both. On the other hand the article stresses that a more broad perspective to look at urban design and urban design for the multi-city participation in social activities. It is necessary to make such participation a better commitment to urban design to create the built environment among not only as a technical process or social process, but as a creative process. During the production process of urban space, we should understand all the factors involved in the process and results. Only in this way can deal with the city as a social space for collection of the many complexities of space, technology, social expression and personal interpretation, and participate in all aspects of the built environment from macro to micro. The cross-link of utopia with the urban design will be contributed to the overall perception of the possible opportunity.
