Current intellectual electronic devices in substations from different manufacturers fall short of unifomity with respect to communication protocols, application program interfaces and data description modes, which result in impasse in realization of interoperability, inconvenience in device configuration and a waste of available resources. In order to realize the interoperability for the intellectual electronic devices in substations, Internaltional Electrical Commitee (IEC) developed and published standard IEC 61850, Communication Networks and Systems in Substation.IEC 61850 is a standard for communication networks and systems in substation and the only one of its kind worldwide, dedicated to the construction and transformation of digital substation and standardization of a seamless communication system for power system. IEC 61850, with its advanced design, renders not only realization of the interoperability, free distribution of functions, openness and stability of system in substation, but also the accuracy and real-time of data transmission in a substation and between substations.Prior to the presence of IEC 61850, ERTU in substation generally applied serial communication protocol while SAS (Substation Automation System) adopted Ethernet communication, which invariably results in the denial of direct access of ERTU to SAS, requesting additional assistance from other devices such as common information management machines, hence the rise in both the possibilities of fault points and the load of work in test and maintenance. By virtue of IEC 61850 standard, ERTU in substations could garner digital energy meter along with access, store and forward data through Ethernet interface, transmitting data into the entire substation network to realize information share. In the inception, the author simply described IEC 61850, briefing the history and research status quo nationwide and worldwide, and analyzed the prospects of application and modeling significance of digital ERTU.Via studying the architecture and analyzing advanced technical features of IEC 61850, the author focused on the modeling method that decomposes application function and information and by the same token composes intellectual electronic device's information model, in compliance with the modeling process of logical node and data modelling, logical device and communication services modeling, as well as the rules for application and extension of logical nodes and data.Given the dependence of the digital ERTU on the scientific research project of Zhejiang Creaway Automation Co., Ltd on Shaoxing 110kV Dalv substation, based on OO (Object-Oriented) modeling theory introduced in IEC 61850, the author proposed a complete standard information model and specific realization combined with actual communication data involved with the modeling of logical nodes, data, logical device and communication services containing data-set, services and reports. IEC 61850 serving as the foundation of digital substation does not contain all the measurements of power energy collection, this is the reason why the author defined a new common data class (CDC) FEE, a new group of objects and a new logical node MEEE that dedicate to the establishment of the object model of ERTU which were instantiated as well.Furthermore, by investigating Substation Configuration Language (SCL), the author analyzed the SCL model and built a SCL model based on ERTU and developed a configuration tool for ERTU in Java programming language and briefed upon it.At last, the author summarized the focus of the project, identified the shortcomings and evaluated the prospects of application of IEC 61850.
