In recent years, with the development of computer technology and the security, stability and reliable operation of the grid is improved, digital substation becomes more and more important. After the International Electrotechnical Commission promulgates IEC61850 standards, digital substation become the development trend in the future, and the communication of the secondary interface is became one of the key technologies in implementation of digital substation. Merging Unit(MU) as a device between the secondary equipment and transformers has a very high value on research and application, such as the improvement of integration, accuracy and reliability of the system, the seamless connection between station control layer and process layer, the predigestion of secondary equipment ect.Currently, there are two ways of the composition of MU which are FPGA and DSP. This composition of MU has many problems such as poor signal quality, poor reliability, poor compatibility and high bit error rate.Firstly, the IEC61850 standard protocol is introduced to the article, and compared with the IEC60044 standard, the functional designs of MU standards are proposed. In the system of MU synchronization, the IRIG-B code and sync pulse signal is introduced, the overhead is reduced while the system clock accuracy is maintained, and system reliability problem is resolved. Then, we select the embedded chip IntelEP80579; it completes the function of data processing and transmission of MU, using Front Side Bus technology to solve the poor signal quality, high bit error rate problems. Next, we carried out a variety of embedded real-time operating system comparison and analysis, VxWorks system as the software system is chosen, software system will be introduced to the MU in order to solve the problem of poor compatibility. Finally, MATLAB and OPNET simulation platform is established, and the overall simulation of MU is carried out. The simulation results show that the program meets the IEC61850 standard and it has high reliability.
