In the process of bus production, the updates of the bus body frame type become shorter and shorter. Rapidly and accurately accomplishing the design is increasingly becoming the main goal of bus body design. For the existing design methods, there is huge workload in the parametric modeling and finite element modeling. It becomes a major contradiction for shorting the cycle of the design process.To solve these two problems in the bus design, according to the characteristics of bus body frame, this paper developed a bus beam structure identification and pre-processing system based on UG software. This system consists of three main processes:identifying bus structure, simplifying the frame and creating finite element model. In the identifying and simplifying process, using the enterprise original CAD model or new design, the system identified and simplified the beam and extracted structure parameter. Meanwhile, the extracted beam parameters were recorded and will be used for the process of operation the finite element model. During the finite element modeling process, the system can automatically create the finite element model file, mesh simplified beams and set the relevant attributes, to solve the difficulties of manually operation. The paper describes the workflow of the system, explained the principle of each step and illustrated the system implementation in detail.In order to verify that the system has practical instruction for design process, this paper took a bus frame model for example, illustrating the system operation in detail. It shows that the system can quickly identify and simplify the beams structure of bus, and it is significantly more efficiency on creating finite elements and setting elements' attributes than previous design methods. Through the solution of the example bus finite model, it points that the simplified model contains the characteristics parameters of beam and can quickly be analyzed by designer. To verify that the system is efficient and the analysis result of the simplified model is accurate, the same example was analyzed, using different design methods. Comparing the spent time of these methods, it declares that the system is sensible and efficient.
