Hydraulic automatic control flap gate has been widely used in various hydraulic engineering with its many advantages like simple structure, open-close in time, energy conservation and environmental protection and so on. Especially in recently year, this flap gate is being successfully used in sandy river hydraulic engineering and bring excellent benefits in economy and society. Hydraulic automatic control flap gate can eliminate the sediment and floating debris in front of the gate when its opening, so its feature is very suitable to applicate in sandy river, but its also could bring many disbennifit influence such as the gate can't be opened normally because of the sediment, the water would fluctuate when its opening and the sediment would affect the gate's structure. This paper take the type of composite motion hydraulic automatic control flap gate for example and expand study according to these problems and obtain the effect of sediment in front of the flap gate, so its can provide evidence for the application of the hydraulic automatic control flap gate in sandy river. The main contents of the paper are as follows:(1) Reviewed the development and research status of the flap gate and pointed out the problem of studying the hydraulic automatic control flap gate in sandy river.(2) Analyzed the mechanism of turnover and stability of the flap gate in sandy river, discussed the difference between the application in clearwater river and in sandy river.(3) Derived the balance equation of the flap gate in sandy river and the critical sediment height formula in abnormal opening level. Then combined with the practical engineering and got the normal opening level of the gate and the critical sediment height in the front of the gate under the abnormal opening level and the design flood level.(4) Derived the opening curve of the flap gate and analyzed the effect of sediment pressure on the flap gate. And then obtained the curve of the water level on the flap gate and the critical sediment height under the condition of the gate can't be opened normally.(5) Established finite element model of various conditions by using the software of Patran.(6) Calculated the numerical simulation of various conditions finite element model by using the finite element software of ABAQUS and furtherly obtain the effect of sediment pressure on the flap gate in sandy river though comparing the stress and deformation of the numerical simulation results.
