This paper focuses on the city square as the basic form of public living space, and its meaning and function of the change. With the literature analysis, There back through the city square in different historical stages from western to china, and gave a glimpse of the modern square, to some extent, it is changing in meaning and function. At the same time, it seems that the space configuration and practice of modern Chinese city square shows a unique look. By a case study of Dongfanghong Square in Lanzhou, author searched for the changing and restructuring process on spatial patterns and its influencing factors. Compared to the political-economic analytical framework of western social theory in space, the results from the domestic case on city center plaza confirmed that, in china, the government power as the characteristics of centralization is significant for controlling and influencing on urban spatial arrangements, embodied in the allocation of space resources, utilization, determined the functional orientation and so on. Secondly, the issues about power of space technology, space organization increased the impact on social life apparently, the combination of urban spatial structure and social governance drawled researchers more attention. In addition, such as Henry Lefebvre and other western scholars advocated "the city's rights" does not seem to appear in china. Viewing the reality changing of china's urban space, all of modern knowledge study on space interpretation and the cultural approach in city square displayed a separation on name and state of its development. A new round of planning in city square expressed a basic aspiration as the functional form for fitting to the progress of modernization, which does not have any history of heavy at all.
