Digital oscilloscope (DO) has become an indispensable tool for test engineer in modern measurement field. The research of advanced DO has been very popular in abroad, and the technology on production DO is nearly mature. However, the development of such equipment in China is still at early stage. Most of engineers in industries have to use the imported DO products with high price and different operating manners. In this cooperative project with DO companies, we proposed a DO design approach using ARM-Linux system and FPGA technology. According to the comparison with other embedded systems based DO, the proposed method achieves high efficiency with small Linux kernel that has powerful functions on source control and flexible API. In addition, compact ARM micro-processor system provides low power consumption and FPGA with high performance. The developed DO system has many advantages over traditional products, such as practicability, portability, easy operation. The research in this digital storage oscilloscope (DSO) project includes the hardware design, embedded ARM-Linux system transplanting, setting on cross compilation, root file system design, driver and user interface design. The focus of this work is on the implementation of FPGA device driver, LCD touch screen application, data processing on different scales, measurements on time constants, interpolation algorithms, FFT algorithm, and mean filter implementation using C language. Finally, the conclusion and future work on improvement are given according to the experimental results. The objective of this project is to develop a DSO with high performance. The technologies used by such DSO include embedded system, advance data acquisition method, and digital signal processing. Consequently, the developed portable DSO would be small in size and of low cost. The functions, such as data collection, processing, analysis, storage, representation, are going to be integrated for easy use. The proposed design has the potential to be adopted by DO industry for next generation production.
