With the acceleration of urbanization, urban transportation infrastructure continues to accelerate. During the period of construction, work zones on roads induce traffic accidents and traffic congestion, and become bottlenecks on urban road. Analysis of these impacts can evaluate the performance and service level of work zones, and improvement measures and traffic organization can be proposed to solve the existing problems in work zones.By the study of the traffic flow characteristics, capacity and service level in work zones, this paper analyzes the impacts of road work on road traffic qualitatively and quantitatively. Both domestic and aboard researches are analyzed firstly, and the study issues, emphases and framework of the paper are put forward. Traffic characteristic of road work zones are studied. Compared to the basic section of the road, there are many evident changes of traffic and road condition between them, and these changes greatly affect the characteristics of road, driver and vehicle.Then, survey of traffic characteristic of road work zone is done, and survey data is used to analyze the impact of road work on the traffic flow characteristics from the microscopic point. The study shows that traffic flow of different areas in the work zone shows different characteristics at different times, and lane-drop in work zone causes traffic congestion.Again, compared the work zone capacity with the normal section of urban road, the reduction factors of work zone capacity are analyzed quantitatively. Taking these factors into account, a capacity model of work zone is proposed, and the calculative result is corrected by measured data.Then, the impact of road work on service level is analyzed qualitatively and quantitatively. Saturation degree, average speed, average travel delay and average number of stops are selected to establish evaluation standard of road service level. Based on the classification of service level, the service level of the work zone is evaluated by VISSIM simulation. Through the contrastive analysis of service level between work zone and normal section, the degree of road work influence on road service level is depicted.
