During it's 30 years'development, China relies deeply on a high-energy consumption and pollution mode, and has already come to the bottleneck. At the meantime, a problem that facing designing is to choice it's future development direction. New ideas of designing have a great impact on us, designers of the new generation, making us at the same level of the world, no matter our concept or our way of thinking. Many designers also demonstrated theoretically and practically a lot of references on low carbon ideas, also have offered assistance. In western countries, an activity called green-designing has been launched, to achieve an idea of coming back to the natural, and to live harmoniously with the natural. This idea however, has similarity with Chinese traditional saying"Mankind and the Natural are united."This thesis tries to talk about under the circumstances of severe pollution, what should designers do in order to reduce pollution and protect our environment, especially during the process of designing and improving city facilities. At the same time, what should designers do to embodiment city history and cultures. Let's take the Culture Plaza in Wuhan city as an example. In the 21th century, with the development of economic, facilities of modern city plazas are facing a problem of redesigning, so as to embody the city history. As a place for people to rest, and to communicate, it needs to be personalized, which would give people a image of the city.Firstly, this thesis goes from the aspect of low carbon, and analizes some of the concerning problems in public facilities designing. As we know, low carbon has become one of the hottest topics internationally. Through the discussion of some developed countries, this thesis concludes the research and practice status of low carbon internationally and domestically.Secondly, looking into people's indoor and out door activities, the thesis tries to find out the relationship between public facility designing and the culture plaza. Basing on local specialties, the thesis tries to extract designing elements that will demonstrate city cultures. Even the designing of benches could demonstrate some local culture. Of course the development is also limited by local economic conditions.Last but not least, the paper tries to focus on the individualization of public facilities. By trying to develop product semantics, functionality, interpretation, and symbolization, we'll get a picture of how benches act to inherit the city culture and specialties. The paper focus on the designing of benches from several point of view, low- carbon, inheritage of history and culture, combining semantics, achieving sustainable development.
