Freeway is one of the most important lifeblood of our traffic industry, and its safety problem is more and more serious, which has aroused much interest of scholars in the relevant fields. With the fast development of computer technique, commu-nication technique, automatic control technique, and artificial intelligence, lots of new freeway traffic safety technology emerg in an endless stream, which play a constructive role in the real project.The paper discusses a new kind of freeway safety technology. A safety traffic system for freeway, based on microwave radar's distance and velocity measurement function, is proposed. The system makes it possible to traffic safely on freeway under atrocious weather, by real-time measurement of the relativistic distance and relative-istic velocity between two vehicles:(1) The character and principle of microwave radar sensor is deeply studied. And basied on this work, the paper designs a kind of microwave radar sensor which can be used to measure the relativistic distance and relativistic velocity of the front target vehicle. The test result indicates that the output of the sensor is quite stable.(2) This paper realizes the hardware module for distance and velocity measure-ment using kernel microprocessor MSP430F436, based on the former sensor. The designnment of signal-rectified, control module and man-machine interface is presen-ted. The test results of signal-rectified show that the rationality of the designment.(3) The signal collecting and processing of microwave radar is discussed. The paper explores the interior mechanism of the distance and velocity detecting system, and builds the modle of the system. The Kalman filtering algorithm is proposed to be used for filtering the collected datas. The simulation result of MATLAB and real experiment result verify the feasibility of the algorithm. (4) The development of maintenance and management software is completed. The system software can be used to set the parameters for the distance and velocity detecting equipment based on microwave radar, which realizes the informationization of microwave radar distance and velocity detecting equipment's management and maintenance.
