| The origin of city is the outcome of social development to a certain phase; and its growth reflects concrete social development. City's evolution has its own inherent rules with distinctive features in each period.Chaozhou city, China's famous historical cultural city, has centuries-old historical connotation and profound cultures accumulated. With a rich characteristic, the city function of Chaozhou has been stable for a long time, and it becomes a representative city in China. Since the modern society, especially the foundation of the People's Republic of China, the development of Chaozhou enters into the unprecedentedly flourish period. In the course of city construction, a lot of ancient urban forms and historical civilization legacy are suffering changes. So studying systematically the theory on the evolvement rules of Chaozhou urban form and historical sequence, searching for the mechanism of evolvement, analyzing the rules and authenticity, redound to protect and renovate the city, as well as keep unique fascination and permanent vigor of local cultures of age-old city.This paper studies on the form evolvement in different periods of Chaozhou by applying urban morphology theory. The first chapter introduces the research background, relevant basic theories, key concepts and research framework. In Chapter Two, on the basis of former research achievements, it has analyzed and studied the urban forms in different primary historical periods, and has compared the inscapes of ancient and modern cities, so as to evaluate the age-old city. The last chapter discusses the protection of the city's overall structure and its development pattern and puts forward the renovation plan from the perspective of respecting this ancient city, which makes the age-old city rich in historical location and a certain characteristic of the era, creates a high quality and age-old city which meets the needs of people's life, modern recreation and culture demands, and makes the cultures last too.
