The quick development of economy and the continuous expansion of urban scale make people's travel demands rising rapidly. At the same time, a large quantity of vehicles come forth in road network. However, there are many problems to make traffic demand greater than supply, such as traffic planning and management does not reach the designated position and incident coping strategies unreasonable. As a result, urban traffic congestion often occurred, which was a serious impact to the urban operation efficiency. Therefore, traffic congestion becomes one of the biggest issues need to be solved. As a project branch to solve the problem of traffic congestion, explaining the formation mechanism of the queue becomes particularly important. Based on the Program of National Natural Science Foundation "Study on chain reaction mechanism of road link jam in urban traffic network (50808035)" and the Special Program of Constructing Interdiscipline Supported by Dalian University of Technology "Study on mathematical modeling and numerical solving methods about urban traffic jam problem",the queuing process on link between adjacent signalized intersections and the calculation of dissipation queue length and residual queue length are mainly discussed in the paper.By consulting literatures, the advantages and disadvantages of current vehicle queue models was summarized.Through analyzing the signal transfer from a vehicle to its follower, a new start-stop wave model was built. Then traffic survey scheme is designed and the model is validated by actual traffic data from the survey. It is found that the previous vehicles queue models based on the shockwave is always used to describing the queuing on highway, and there were always limitations when they are used on urban roads directly. So we consider link length and signal timing at upstream and downstream intersections as two kinds of factors and the new stop-start model is used to describe the queuing process on link between adjacent synchronous and asynchronous signalized intersections. From this premise, a new model which was used to describe the queuing process for link between adjacent signalized intersections is built. In order to validate the effectiveness of the model,a simulated scheme was designed by the VISSIM software, and the results show that the model is reliable. The main works of this paper include proposing a new start-stop wave model and using it on urban roads, and then building a queuing model for link between two adjacent coordinated intersections. These achievements can enhance the practicality of shockwave mode on urban roads, provide new ideas and methods to describe vehicles queuing process on road where the link length is limited and enrich the traffic flow theory.
