With the increase of import and export trade in emerging nations, especially the economic development of China, there'll be a huge demand for iron ore and the similar raw materials. As s result, a large number of bulk cargo carrier will be needed in the future. Unfortunately, just a few large bulk cargo carrier were built in the recent 10 years which is far from we need. Besides that, according to the Revised Regulation 13G/AnnexI of MARPOL, all of the single hull oil tanker must be eliminated which means refit the single hull oil tanker is very urgent. Now the market of bulk cargo carrier is very prosperous and refitting single hull oil tanker to bulk cargo carrier has a lot of advantages such as short cycle, good feasibility and economics. Obviously refitting single hull oil tanker to bulk cargo carrier will definitely be a very good plan.In this paper a 140000DWT Suez single hull oil tanker is taken as an example which will be refitted to the bulk cargo carrier. First, we should investigate the feasibility of refitting based on the whether shipyard has enough shipbuilding berth and supporting facilities, the safety and economy during the process of refitting, and the influence to the oil and bulk cargo market after refitting. Second, the difference between single hull oil tanker and bulk cargo carrier in deck, side shell, double bottom is compared. In addition we also do some analysis about the technological problem which maybe occurred during the refitting. Then, we promoted the refitting plan according to the general arrangement, double bottom inner shell, and the calculation of section modulus of transverse section. At last, we create three cargo hold FEM in order to check whether the ship meets the requirement of the classification. After detailed analysis, we find that the refitted ship can fully meet the requirement of the classification. So this refitting plan is viable. Generally, the refitting plan we promote in this paper having a good economics which can be the reference for changing a single hull oil tanker to the bulk cargo carrier.
