Red Mud is a waster material formed during the production of alumina. Zhongzhou aluminum plant multi-year sintered red mud contain so much alkaline substance that the phenomenon of floating hoarfrost is serious which has serious impact on red mud utilization. At present the accumulation of red mud had already reached 19 million m3. A large number of red mud is not only occuping much farmland and hills, but also causing serious air and water pollution. In this article, discussing the causes and influencing factors of sintered red mud by studying the chemical and mineral composition of the Zhongzhou Aluminum different period of sintered red mud and the hoarfrost of the red mud. And try to find out a new resource path by using different period of sintered red mud to fabricate red mud sintered bricks. This study can solve the issue of stockpiling too much red mud, changing waste into treasure. It can also bring considerable economic and social benefits while dressing environmental problem.Many Experiments are made to research micro-morphology, chemical and mineral composition of different periods sintered red mud and the hoarfrost by X-diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, atomic absorption and other methods. The hoarfrost can be divided into soluble materia(lNaCl,KCl,Na2CO3,KHCO3,NaNO3)and insoluble material(CaCO3,MgCO3) according to the solubility. The two kinds of hoarfrost have different impacts on the process of floating hoarfrost, and the main factor is the latter. Considering the chemical and mineral composition of different periods sintered red mud and the hoarfrost, this paper study the transformation of hoarfrost in the calcination process, and find that alkaline substance can be changed into insoluble substance by the calcination process in order to eliminate the phenomenon of floating foarfrost and at the same time improve the compressible strength of the bricks. Combination of the above problems, respectively mixing with Yellow River silt sand, fly ash and coal gangue, different period of sintered red mud as the main material was sintered to a new-style sintered production.The whole experiment is divided into four parts, 24 batches and prepared more than 260 sintered bricks.The result shows different period red mud bricks have different sintering process and performance,and the red mud and gangue sintered bricks'performance are better than the others. Compressible strength is one of important character of sintered bricks as well as bibulous rate. Effects of sintering temperature, molding pressure, and content of red mud time were investigated. Experimental results show that on the best conditions, the phenomenon of floating hoarfrost is basically disappeared, and the compressible strength reaches 13.10Mpa,the bibulous rate is 21.6%, all indicators meet the requirements prescribed in GB5101-2003.
