With the increasing demands for oil and gas, there have been increasing needs of exploring and developing more and more complex oil and gas fields. It consequently promotes the development of drilling equipments in the direction of high performance and high automation. The top drive drilling system (hereinafter referred to as TDS) is characteristic of high drilling speed, simple operation, reduction of labor intensity and high security. It is particularly facilitates the development and exploration in inclined and horizontal wells. Therefore, it contributes to the wider and wider application of TDS in major drilling engineering companies. The high costs and procurement services of imported TDS make it imperative and necessary to achieve the domestically produced of TDS.According to SY/T 6726-2008 standard of Top Drive Drilling System of Drilling Rig and with reference to the current and main requirements of using TDS, this paper chooses Alternating Current Variable Frequency Drive Top Drive Drilling System (AC VFD TDS) with the nominal drilling depth of 7000m as the research direction. Through the detailed comparison of similar equipments of several famous brands, the paper selects the optimal structure and design parameters. It also conducts three-dimensional modeling and finite element analysis and stress analysis of the main load bearing parts, including frame, rotating head and the main shaft. Then it conducts structural optimization design and strength check. In terms of the overall size of the TDS, it determines the empirical parameters, applies mechanics knowledge and strength theory, check the strength and then determine the size of the equipment according to relevant regulations of parts stipulated in the standard. The paper then establishes three-dimensional model by Solidworks applications to simulate the operations of TDS. It ensures that the design could be feasibility from the structure.In addition, in order to achieve the high automation, the hydraulic system is applied, which could be achieve the operations of TDS such as balance system, the screwing on and screwing off, brakes, rotate and lock of totating head and back clamp tightening. The paper gives reference to the actions of TDS, preliminarily shows the hydraulic system, and the hydraulic system drawing and hydraulic schematic drawing according to hydraulic theory.
