Wood-rubber composites have been proposed as a new class of functional composite materials, which is a comprehensive way of efficient utilization of planted forest, pollution-free recycling utilization and improving the value of forest products. The paper was to that material comprising of poplar particle and waste rubber powder. Manufacturing technology including hot pressing and mould pressing was complete studied. Composite material's composition of VOC was determining. In order to enhance the property of composite, the rubber powder was treated with microwave. The main results and highlight from this study can be summarized as follows:(1) The effects of main hot-pressing experimental variables on the properties of the composite have been fully investigated. The results indicated that the rubber content, hot-pressing temperature, hot-pressing time, resin consumption and density are the most significant variable that impacts on the composite performance. The suggested optimal manufacturing conditions were about 30% for rubber content,160℃for hot-pressing temperature,3% for resin consumption,0.8 g/cm3 for densities. All physical and mechanical properties of the board met the requirements of particleboard standard of China (GB/T4897.3—2003).(2) The optimal manufacturing conditions of mould pressing were about 30% for rubber content,3% for resin consumption,0.8g/cm3 for densities,190℃for mould-pressing temperature and 15min for mould-pressing time. The property of composites which were made under this condition also can meet the requirements of particleboard standard of China (GB/T4897.3—2003).(3) After analysing the composition of VOC emiting from poplar particle/rubber powder composites, it was shown that the main component were aromatic, alkane, esters and terpenes. The aromatic compounds was the highest content in the VOC.(4) The property of composite can be improved by using the rubber powder treated with microwave. It is obtained the specific modification condition (120S,640w).(5) The result of contact angle and fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) was shown that the microwave can enhance the surface activity of rubber powder. The tight combination was observed in the composite made by modified rubber powder through the scanning electron microscope (SEM).
