Due to the predominance of fast-make-up and flexibility. Welding technology is widely used in the modern manufacturing industry. Excessive welding residual stress and residual strain of steel welding has always been a major problem. With the development of advanced manufacturing technology, automatization, intelligence and flexibility have become the inevitable trend in welding technology. Computer simulation can predict the residual deformation and residual stress, provide theoretical guidance for the production, improve efficiency and reduce costs. So it has important practical significance and is necessary to do research on it.In this paper, the characteristics of welding thermal process are summarized and the finite element method is introduced. Then temperature field is simulated to predict stress and strain fields as the indirect means. Double ellipsoid heat source model and necessary simplifications are proposed to simulate a plate butt welding with the material of Q345B.Thermocouple temperature acquisition device is designed to collect experiment data. Two sets of data have a good degree of fit after comparing the simulation data with the experiment data, indicating that the temperature field numerical simulation program has high feasibilityTraditional methods can not apply to welding optimization in which the design variables are various and the types of welding process parameters are diverse. According to the characteristics of welding thermal processing and actual needs, genetic algorithm combined with the finite element analysis is proposed to make welding processes optimized. A two-dimensional model of plate butt welding is exampled to prove the validity and rationality of this coupled optimization method.
