The Research About Character's Costumes In The Novel

Based on the novel Gone with the wind, this paper studied the characters' costumes in the novel.Firstly,excerpted the fashion-related content and classified them. Then,analysed the costume glossary in terms of novel and related materials. At last,summarized the fashion style during the civil war and the post-war reconstruction period.Paper is divided into seven chapters, with the exception of both the introduction and conclusion, the other five chapters is:women's clothing, men's clothing, men and women dress general, clothing fabrics and clothing customs during the war.A more complete image(in 1861-1873) of the central charaters in the novel has been shown. the paper concluded:(1) women's clothing:mainly using flannel, calico, taffeta, organdie, muslin, plaid, velvet, satin, lace and so on to made decorative beautiful coat and skirt. In the early 1860s,it prevailed X shape. Women use bodice,hoop skirts and petticoats to create this effect. Bustles prevailed in the end of 1860s and the early of 1870s.The body emphasis moved to the center of the hip. Small hat became more popular than bonnet, feathers instead of flowers to decorate the hat. During this period, women went out playing parasols and wearing hats, veils and mittens to protect their white skin. The majority of women in war have experienced shortage of material, homespun has been popular for some time.(2) men's apparel:mainly use broadcloth to make coat, shepherd's plaid has been popular for some time in the production of men's trousers. The man usually weared suit that contains coats,waistcoats and trousers or britches (in the early 1860's), a broad scarf, Panama hat or a variety of slouch hat. During the war they mainly weared military uniforms, often adopting red,yellow and blue stripes on the uniform pants to distinguish between different branches. Because of the lack of uniform fabric,the soldiers of the South in the late war weared homespun uniforms or even weared the North soldiers' blue coat directly.(3)Through analysing the male and female dress general terms:hat, braided, underwear, gaiters and so on, we can found:Some apparels were adopted by women after men.Not only women led the fashion in the history.
