Feather, as a natural material, is also used to be the decorative materials of costume with special processing techniques for long.In different historical periods, feather was decorated costume in different approach and craftsmanship, it also become the particularly unique and wonderful part of the history of fashion. Besides that, there are many examples show the decorative of feather still used in haute couture and ready-to-wear.After research, there were few literatures, which mainly researched and applied on the feathers'decorative using in fashion design, and they were not complete combined of fashion history, fashion culture, modern fashion design and technology. Therefore, it is especially important to do the full and detail research and development on the feathers' decorative using in fashion design, it will be the supplement for the process of feathers in modern fashion design.With a great deal of literature and information, I found decorative feather has a lot of deep meaning from the evolution of feather costume,and with the contrast of feather costume between ancient and modern, it summarizes two fundamental causes of the phenomenon that the using of feathers in modern fashion:development of human society and human aesthetic. The application and studies of feathers'using in modern fashion is the focus of this paper, with graphic design theory and fashion design theory, I refined and standardized the decorative process of feathers in modern fashion. Furthermore, this paper also researched the techniques of feather costume production, and detailed the design and materialized processes of the feather costume, makes feather combine with continuously updated fashion design and technology.There are several conclusions in this paper:First, it proved that feather decorative has always been throughout the history of fashion, and had rich cultural connotations.Secondly, with a large number of feather decoration design examples, it shows many different way that how feathers decorate costumes, and the decorative techniques are closely related to the structure processing, the choice of fabrics and accessories, innovation of technology and so on. Feather decoration is a particular fashion design approach especially in the details.Third, with different decorative techniques and diversified combination, feathers could express the style and connotation of costumes. Finally, the decorative use of feathers has a huge space for development in all kinds of apparel markets, understanding of feathers' process in apparel production could help designers adjust the use of clothing materials better, and could promote the development and application of feathers in the fashion design, teaching, production, trade and other areas.
