China is rich in bentonite resources, with an extensive distribution of producing areas. But high quality Na- bentonite resources are relatively insufficient, mostly belong to Ca- bentonite.The structure and basic properties of the bentonite produced in western Liaoning Province are studied. The bentonite,s essential mineral ingredients are calcium montmorillonite,the accompanying impurities are mostly cristobalite, along with small parts of chlorite, calcite and cristobalite organic substance. This bentonite is classified as the dioctahedron montmorillonite , has the characteristics of cheto type montmorillonite. It is purified by different methods, experiments show that the cyclone method can give the best purification result, the content of the purified montmorillonite can reach to above 70% and the whiteness to 89%. Study of sodium ionization is taken on the bentonite by semidry process and wet process, with the influential factors varying with different sodium ionization methods. For semidry process the sodium ionization conditions are: 3% Na2CO3, 20% moisture addition, 3 days of ageing time, noodle maker extrusion, the colloid index is greater than 100ml/15g, and the swelling volume is 48ml/g. This method has already being used in enterprise production. The processing conditions for wet process sodium ionization is: 2% Na2CO3, solid to liquid ratio is 1:2.5, the pH value of the solution is adjusted to greater than 7, the mixing time is 2h, the colloid index is greater than 100ml/15g, and the swelling volume is close to 50ml/g. Three methods are used to produce bentonite gel products, and the performances of them have some differences. After the sodium ionization by semidry process, MgO is added, the obtained bentonite gel product can reach to the third bentonite standard. After the sodium ionization by wet process, MgO is added, the obtained bentonite gel product can reach to the first bentonite standard for drilling, but its application is limited by its problems in filtration and drying. After the sodium ionization by semidry process, MgO and lignin are then added, the obtained bentonite gel product can reach to the first bentonite standard for drilling, it is now under the tests for future industrialization.
