China and many other countries are under the threat of lacking of water resources at present. Agriculture consumes most of the water. The pressure of lacking of water can be reduced by water saving irrigation. The most widely used water saving irrigation technique is sprinkling irrigation. The sprinkler is the key parts of the sprinkling irrigation system. The circular sprinklers with a large range, especially the impact sprinklers, are used in large numbers at present time. But the circular sprinklers can not irrigate irregular boundary area uniformly, and this disadvantage reduces the amount of water they can save.The all-terrain sprinkler that can fit any irregular areas is put forward in this paper, based on the research level on sprinklers in the world and the thoroughly analysis of the demands to the sprinklers. The all-terrain sprinkler is very important to water saving irrigation, because it will save more water than any of the present sprinklers.The device of the all-terrain sprinkler that controls the boundary of sprinklers should be adjustable. The all-terrain sprinkler should be able to cover every dot in its range and should be able to cover a large area. Principles and structures that can help the sprinklers have an irregular boundary area are thoroughly analyzed and some new methods are put forward. All of these methods are compared to find which is better. A new adjustable device that controls the boundary of sprinkler is designed. Impeller drive is the best way to fit any boundary and to irrigate uniformly according to a special analysis of the modes that sprinklers are driven. Scan to cover all the area is the best way to irrigate uniformly based on the analysis of means that sprinklers cover all the area. Methods to improve the uniformity of sprinklers are analyzed and some new methods are provided. Combinations of the methods are compared to find their feasibility, and to find which is better.The way to appraise the performance of sprinklers should be improved. Some new parameters, such as uniformity, pretermission rate, superabundance rate, superposition rate and area covered should be introduced.At the end of the paper, a new sprinkler based on new theory is carried out and tested. According to the result of the test, the new sprinkler can obviously save more water than the present impact sprinklers.
