By elemental analysis, rare earth coordination titration and TGA-DSC studies, the composition of the binary complexes was suggested as RE L4 (ClO4)2·3H2O (RE= Sm, Eu, Tb, Dy; L=C6H5COCH2SOCH2COOH) and the trinary complexes was suggested as RE L3 L'(ClO4)2·3H2O (RE= Sm, Eu, Tb, Dy; L'=C6H5COO-, Dipy, phen; L=C6H5COCH2SOCH2COOH)。The study on IR spectra and 1HNMR spectra indicated that acetophenonylcarboxymethyl sulfoxide bonded with RE3+ ions by the oxygen atom in sulfinyl group and carboxyl, while the oxygen atom in carbonyl group did not. The second ligands 2,2'-Dipyridyl and O-Phenanthroline bonded with RE3+ ions by the nitrogen atom respectively. The second ligand Benzoic Acid bonded with RE3+ ions by carboxylic acid group. The molar conductivities in DMF solution indicated that two ClO4- are not coordinated with RE3+. The fluorescent spectra illustrated that the binary and trinary complexes displayed characteristic metal-centered fluorescence in solid state. Compared with the binary complexes, some trinary complexes exhibited stronger fluorescence but the others were not. Phosphorescent spectra of ligands showed that the triplet state energy levels of second ligands were different. So the efficiency of the energy transfer was different.
