Optimizing the workshop layout is an issue that the academic and engineering technicians are exploring and researching all the time. The layout of the workshop straightly determines the quality of products, the production rate and the economic effectiveness. While solving the problem of layout in practice, an optimizing and perfecting design is often needed to be determined in a short time to improve the route of physical stream in the workshop and the equipment utilization, in order to increase the space utilization, labor productivity and economic effectiveness as well. Therefore, it is crucially important to find a scientific and logical method of solving layout problem.This paper is intended to research on how to optimize the workshop layout with the method of genetic algorithm.Firstly, this paper makes an introduction on the content, principle, the designing method that commonly used at present and designing target of the workshop layout. Concerning the researching status quo, it is also analyzed and summarized in this paper the problem of workshop layout. Secondly, with the cyanate ester resin workshop as the main body, an initial layout is designed based on the analysis of the basic process flow of resin production. The progressing target shall be decided in the next step of optimization, aiming at the various problems discovered in the recent production line. Thirdly, an optimized mathematical model is built in this paper oriented to the minimum of production material flow charge in the workshop. Based on the optimal operation of each working unit, substituting the relative data on the production line of cyanate ester resin into mathematical model with the method of genetic algorithm through calculating process, the final layout after second optimization shall be worked out.In the end, with the absolute value of the workshop area and the availability of it as the contrast, this paper analyzes and makes an contrast between the layouts before and after optimization, and conducts an expectation for the future work.
